The label, line by line
What is inside an Alvera roll-on
The back of the bottle prints its ingredients under one word, CONTAINS. Here is that list in the label's order, with what each entry is.
Aloe first
The one number on the label
Aloe vera gel is listed first and carries the only figure the label prints: 75%. The other entries share the rest and carry no figures.
Contains
The list, in the label's order
- 1
75% Aloe Vera Gel
The clear gel from the inner leaf of the aloe plant. It is the base of the roll-on and three quarters of the bottle by the label's own figure.
- 2
Herb Water (containing Arnica, Calendula, Gentian Root and Coriander)
Water in which four plants have been steeped: arnica and calendula flowers, gentian root and coriander.
- 3
Alcloxa (contains allantoin)
The label's own note says it contains allantoin. Alcloxa is the short name of aluminum chlorohydroxy allantoinate, a compound of allantoin with aluminum. It is not one of the antiperspirant actives in the federal rule. Named in the KEGG DRUG entry and absent from 21 CFR 350.10.
- 4
Glyceryl Stearate
An emulsifier made from glycerin and stearic acid. It holds the watery and oily parts of a lotion together.
- 5
Gum Arabic
A plant gum from acacia trees, used to thicken a liquid.
- 6
Whole Oat Protein
Protein from oats.
- 7
Witchhazel
An extract of the witch hazel shrub.
- 8
Grapefruit Seed Extract
An extract pressed from grapefruit seeds.
- 9
Comfrey
A plant of the borage family. The label does not say which part is used.
- 10
TEA
Short for triethanolamine, a compound used in cosmetics to balance acidity and to help the oily and watery parts of a lotion stay mixed.
- 11
Fragrance
The scent. U.S. rules let a label print the single word instead of the scent's own ingredients. Aloe Unscented stops one entry earlier and does not print this word.
Unscented and "Fragrance"
Aloe Unscented is the Alvera whose list does not include the word Fragrance. That is worth checking on any brand, because the two words do not always go together.
“Even some products labeled 'unscented' may contain fragrance ingredients.”
“But under U.S. regulations, fragrance and flavor ingredients can be listed simply as 'Fragrance' or 'Flavor.'”
What the label says is not in it
The front and back of the bottle make one promise about what is left out. We repeat it as the label prints it and add nothing to it.
“Guaranteed to contain no animal ingredients, alcohol, dyes, artificial preservatives or bactericides.”
Words the label does not use
Some shop pages call this roll-on hypoallergenic. The bottle does not, and the word has no fixed meaning in U.S. law.
“There are no Federal standards or definitions that govern the use of the term "hypoallergenic."”
About aloe gel on skin
Aloe gel is the base of this roll-on. The National Institutes of Health sum up what is known about putting it on skin.
“Topical use of aloe gel is generally well tolerated; however, there have been occasional reports of burning, itching, rash, and eczema.”
“Aloe products can be made from various parts of the aloe leaf, including the gel (from the inner leaf), latex (from the leaf’s outer layer), and whole crushed leaf (containing the gel and latex).”
Reading a label is not medical advice. If your skin reacts to a product, stop using it and ask a doctor or pharmacist.
Questions
About the Alvera ingredient list

Is Alvera deodorant vegan?
The label says it has no animal ingredients. That is the first of 5 exclusions printed on the back of the 3 fl oz Alvera bottle, and none of the 11 listed entries names an animal source.

No. Baking soda is not among the 11 ingredients printed on the Alvera bottle, which start with 75% aloe vera gel and end with Fragrance.
